English 9 is a year-long required class for freshmen at Postville. Students in English 9 learn comprehension and literary techniques for novels, plays, poetry, short stories, journalism, and epics. They also build their writing skills in both creative and academic writing, with examples being the autobiography and the thesis-driven application essay. Plus, English 9 has a success skills curriculum incorporated, which includes goals, leadership, team-building, personality inventories, conflict resolution, problem solving, and responsibility. This culminates in a careers-exploration activity which is done jointly with health class.
