I teach 9th and 11th grade English (American Literature) as well as Great Books, Publications, and Discovering Literature. I also am the play director, freshman class sponsor, and the yearbook advisor.
There are several things that I am currently working on to improve students' education at Postville High School. Here is a quick list:
- I am in the second year of a Publications class, in which students work on school publications while learning journalism, editing, and technology skills. Students are working on the school yearbook and newspaper, as well as avideo yearbook this year. Other publications, such as a student-run webpage and a school newsletter are in the works
- I recently was certified to teach k-12 talented and gifted. I am applying some of this with personalized education plans for gifted students in my classroom which challenge them beyond the regular curriculum
- I am working on building an AP curriculum at Postville. This year, I am serving as the on-line coordinator for the school for students who wish to take an AP class on-line (a free option for students who finish the class). AP (Advanced Placement) is a program where students take a college-level class and then take a final test, where a high enough score will result in the student receiving college credit at 95% of United States universities and colleges. AP is also the #1 indicator of success in college, which means the students who take AP are much more likely to be successful in college than those that don't
- I am serving on the technology committee, with my main objective being to establish technological standards and benchmarks for high school students, as well as a curriculum for them to learn the basics
- I am instituting a success skills curriculum starting in ninth grade English class aimed at having students reflect upon and work on skills for success. This includes: goals, leadership, conflict resolution, responsibility, problem solving, personality inventory, understanding others, career exploration, intrinsic motivation, and ethical values
- I am doing research on Renzulli's Type III enrichment (a student-led inquiry) for my Master's Degree research
